St. John’s Jesuit to Perform Taming of the Shrew

St. John’s Jesuit Campion Players announces its Fall production of The Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare to be held on November 4, 5 and 6 in the McQuade Theater.

According to Barbara Trimble, Director, The Taming of the Shrew tells the story of Petruchio, a gentleman from Verona, who comes to Padua seeking a bride with a dowry that matches the inheritance left to him by his late father. He meets Kate, whose strong will and intelligence have branded her a shrew in the male-dominated society of 1950s Italy. Her father, Baptista, is rich, and is eager to marry her off so that his younger daughter, Bianca, much sought-after by wealthy suitors, can also be married. Kate and Petruchio enter into a battle of wits, their marriage is arranged against her will, and Petruchio’s plan to tame her spirit seems to be going according to plan. But the plan didn’t include falling in love, and the tables turn on the other two couples in the play in a final test of “true” obedience and love.
