Department of Music

Welcome! Some of you are here because you want to prepare for a career in music. And some of you are here, because, well, you just love music and know it'll always be an important part of your life. Regardless, we're here to help you develop through an appreciation of music.

We have a mission: The Department of Music develops Christian leaders who are competent and confident musicians. Each student achieves his greatest potential of artistic expression and aesthetic judgment through the study and performance of music of many genres in an inclusive, supportive environment. Students model teamwork, a commitment to excellence, unselfishness and a passion for music's important role in the enrichment of the human spirit.

Tim Martin- Director of Instrumental Music

Luke D. Rosen - Director of Choral and Liturgical Music

We have a variety of ensembles to accompany our eclectic tastes in music. These include the Marching Titans, the Symphonic Band, the Jazz Machine, the Men's Chorus, the SJJ Vocal Ensemble, the Liturgical Instrumental Ensemble, the Basketball Pep Band and the Community Middle School Band.

Music is a lot of fun at SJJ, but we also take our music classes seriously as academic courses. Our music curriculum includes Music Technology, Music Appreciation, and AP Music Theory. AP Music Theory and Music Technology are taught in the Fox Music Technology Lab, a state-of-the-art facility that rivals major university music technology labs.

Tim Martin
Director of Instrumental Music

Tim Martin was a member of the prestigious Ohio University Marching 110 performing on the snare drum for five years.  He has performed with the Glassmen Drum and Bugle Corps.

Although the snare drum is his instrument of choice, he has taught percussion, brass, and woodwind classes. One of his strengths is helping band students discover their best instrument fit. Plus, he has been involved in  leadership activities through the Americorps Program and Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Program.

Luke D. Rosen

Luke D. Rosen received his Bachelor of Music (Choral Music Education) and Master of Music (Choral Conducting Performance) degrees from Bowling Green State University. At Bowling Green, he also studied composition.

In addition to his position at St. John’s Jesuit, he has served as the Director of Music Ministry at Corpus Christi University Parish, serving the Catholic community at the University of Toledo, since 2000.

A clinician for the Toledo chapter of National Pastoral Musicians, he has offered workshops on liturgical piano and piano improvisation. He was the first student representative to the Ohio Choral Directors Association state choral board, and currently serves as webmaster for the organization. He has been an active member of the Toledo Masterworks Chorale since 2006.

He writes frequently for the church, premiering many of his compositions at Corpus Christi. Other composition premiers have taken place at St. John’s Jesuit, Bowling Green State University, and with the Cleveland Chamber Symphony Orchestra. In addition to contributing to numerous audio and video recordings, he has also released two CDs of original works: “Stations of the Cross – Prayer in Music” and “Comfort and Joy – Christmas at Corpus Christi University Parish”.
