The SJJ Model U.N. team will hold a short meeting in Room 107 during today's Activities Period. Any students interested in debate, espionage, and world domination are encouraged to attend. The meeting should not last more than fifteen minutes, so there will still be time to go to other clubs afterwards.

The SJJ cross country team opened up its season at the Norm Bray Invitational in Fremont on Saturday, bringing home a 5th place team finish. Junior Shane Riley lead the Titans, finishing in 14th place individually. Freshman Will Halker, senior Mike Theis, and sophomores Liam Seiple and Roman Marra rounded out the scoring. The Titan harriers head to BGSU this weekend for the Mel Brodht Invite.

Congratulations to this week's "Chick-fil-A Faculty or Staff Member and Student/Athlete of the Week" award winners, Mr. Joe Grier and junior Eli Shope. Mr. Grier has been a part of the SJJ Buildings & Grounds staff for nearly 20 years, and his expertise and professionalism has always been greatly appreciated. Eli led the Titan soccer team to a season-opening victory over Southview last week, scoring two goals in the 4-1 win. Great job, Titans!

The Office of Student Life is hosting Video Game Week in the Carty Fox Commons through this Friday. During 5th and 6th periods each day, specific classes are welcomed to participate. Today is reserved for sophomores, tomorrow will be for freshmen, and Friday is for faculty and staff. During all other periods, everyone is welcomed to play.

Congratulations to Mr. Phil Anthony and to junior McCoy Butler on their selections as the Chick-fil-A "Faculty Member and Student of the Week," respectively. Mr. Anthony teaches in the Foreign Language Department at SJJ and recently tied for the most DCVs issued this school year. Butler led the SJJ baseball team on the mound earlier this week, throwing a complete game in a 3-2 win over "That School on Bancroft." Great job, Titans!

Mr. Savona is a graduate of the SJJ Class of '75, and in addition to being the Academy Principal, he recently accepted the position of Interim President. Alex scored 10 goals for the Titan lacrosse team last Tuesday, leading the team to an 18-10 victory over Southview on his birthday. Great job, Titans!

Congratulations to Mrs. Lesia McHugh and to senior C.J. Patton for their selection as the Chick-fil-A "Staff Member and Student of the Week," respectively. Mrs. McHugh is the Director of Transportation at SJJ, organizing and transporting students to and from events throughout Ohio and Michigan. Patton is a pivotal member of the SJJ track and field team, recently signing with Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, to continue his academic and athletic career. Great job, Titans!

Congratulations to Nurse Julie Zaborowski and to senior Michael Fleck on their selections as the Chick-fil-A "Faculty Member and Student of the Week," respectively. Mrs. Zaborowski serves the SJJ student body each day in the Nurse's Office and is organizing this year's "Sports Physical Day," which will be held on May 24th. Fleck batted .667 during the baseball team's trip to Myrtle Beach over Spring Break, going 10 for 15 with 4 RBIs, and he also picked up 9 strikeouts as a pitcher. Great job, Titans.

Congratulations also to Mrs. Kacy Hardiman and to junior Vince Williams on their selections as Chick-fil-A Faculty Member and Student of the Week, respectively. Mrs. Hardiman is an English teacher at SJJ and is active in many after school student activities. Vince helped lead the Titan varsity basketball team to a District championship and a "Final 8" finish in the state tournament, and was recently voted the Three Rivers Athletic Conference Player of the Year. Congratulations to Fr. Tom Doyle, junior Vince Williams, and senior Harrison Riggs on their selections as Chick-fil-A's "Faculty Member and Students of the Week," respectively. Fr. Doyle helped run last week's Freshman Retreat and regularly kicks off SJJ sporting events with thoughtful and appropriate prayers, while Vince and Harrison led the Titan basketball team to a 21-2 regular season record and a TRAC championship. Vince was also recently named Co-Player of the Year in the TRAC and both he and Harrison were elected to 1st team all-conference. Great job, Titans.

Congratulations to Mr. Butch Welling and to SJJ swimmers Patrick Gorman, Joel Perino, Alec Pelok, Andrew Titgemeyer, and Jonah Kale for being selected as the Chick-fil-A Staff Member and Students of the Week, respectively. Mr. Welling has served SJJ in many capacities for over 40 years, none more impactful than his current role as a freshman Theology teacher. Congratulations to the SJJ debate team, which qualified eight students for the state tournament next weekend. Participating in the event will be the Markho brothers, Alex White, Jacob Dzierwa, Matt Drouard, Neil Feldman, Daniel Leizerman, and Adam Braun. Leizerman and Braun also qualified for the national tournament this summer in Birmingham, Alabama, making them the first SJJ national qualifiers since 2004. Great job, Titan debaters!

The SJJ swim team completed its season this past Saturday at the District Meet, placing 19th overall. The 200 and 400 free relay teams both placed 15th, the 200 medley relay placed 16th, senior Patrick Gorman placed 27th in the 100 back, freshman Nate Smith placed 30th in the 200 IM and 31st in the 100 fly, and sophomore Andrew Titgemeyer took 32nd in the 500 free. Congratulations to the aqua-Titans on a great season!

The SJJ chess team's season came to an end on Monday with a defeat by the undefeated team from "That School on Bancroft." SJJ lost just one game but was only able to manage draws on the other three boards. Congratulations to Mr. Nate Pearson and to senior Blake Williams on being named this week's SJJ Staff Member and Student of the Week, respectively. Nate, an SJJ alum, currently serves as nighttime security as he works toward his degree at The University of Toledo. He has also been an assistant coach for both football and baseball in recent years. Blake scored all of his 15 points in the decisive 4th quarter of last Friday's basketball game at Whitmer, including four huge three-pointers. Great job, Titans.

Doug Pearson is a Counselor, Teacher, and was the head football coach at SJJ for the past 15 years. He works tirelessly to help his student athletes continue both their athletic and academic careers at the next level.

The JV swim team competed in Canton, Ohio at the JV State Championships.  The Titans swam personal bests in their individual events.  Jalil Mitchell dominated his events dropping two seconds in the 50 free and 5 seconds in the 100 free.  Alex Peseckis dropped a second in the 50 free and placed 11th in the 100 backstroke.  Jack Ryan placed 13th in the 100 breaststroke and Matthew Marcos had a great meet swimming personal bests in the 50 free and 100 free.

The Varsity Team swam at the Ken Gipe Relay taking 7th out of 11 teams.  The 300 IM Relay of Patrick Gorman, Joel Perino, and Nate Smith took third.  The 200 Medley Relay of Andrew Titgemeyer, Alec Pelok, Nate Smith, and Jonah Kale took second.  The Next Meet for the Titans is sectionals this Saturday at Napoleon HS.

The Titans competed at the NWOAC Championships this weekend placing seventh out of twelve teams.  The Medley Relay started the meet off placing sixth of Patrick Gorman, Alec Pelok, Nate Smith, and Joel Perino.  Smith followed the relay taking eighth in the 200 free and 10th in the 100 free. Gorman helped out his team by placing eighth in the 50 free and 100 backstroke.  Sophomores Andrew Titgemeyer and Jonah Kale swam personal bests in their events.  Next meet is JV State and Gipe Relays this weekend. The Staff Person of the Week is Cathy McCarty.  Cathy serves as the ASP coordinator and also coordinates all of the books and calculators distributed to the students at SJJ. Cathy will be retiring at the end of this school year, and her time and effort is greatly appreciated. 

The Student/Athlete of the Week is Junior Basketball player Austin Beier.  Austin  stepped in and defended St. Edward's post player Kevin Calhoun on Satruday and neutralized his offensive efforts throughout the 2nd half.  Austin's efforts helped the Titans prevail on the road against the state power 57-43.

Congratulations to Mr. Pete Calkins and to senior Blake Williams on their selections as Chick-fil-A Staff Member and Student-Athlete of the Week, respectively. Mr. Calkins is a member of the nighttime custodial staff and is a big supporter of SJJ athletics. He is known to observe practices and games whenever possible and contribute wisdom to the athletes and coaches when needed. Senior Blake Williams led the Titan varsity basketball team to a 52-42 road victory over "That School on Bancroft" last Friday, and was the team's high scorer with 19 points, 14 of which came in the 4th quarter. Great job, Titans!

St. John's Jesuit's grotto to Mary, Untie-er of Knots, was introduced at last week's Reconciliation Service and is currently standing outside the Main Office. If there is anything in your life you'd like help with to overcome, we invite you to reflect on it, take one of the ribbons from the basket, write on it whatever it is you'd like help with overcoming, and tie it to the grotto. This is a great way to try a new method of prayer during Advent.

This year's March for Life in Washington, DC, will be held on January 27th. SJJ is looking to take 15 interested students to lobby at Congress with our representatives and participate in the March for Life with hundreds of thousands of young people from across the country. The trip will last from January 25th-27th. Seats will be claimed on a first come, first served basis, and the expectation is to have the trip filled by the first week back from Christmas Break. Taking 1st place in their respective races were Nate Smith, Patrick Gorman, and the 200-medley and 200-free relay teams. Mrs. Matuszak has worked at SJJ for over 15 years, currently moderates the SJJ Spirit Squad, and had a son graduate from SJJ in 2007. Colin led the crew team's Novice 4 and Novice 8 squads to gold medals this past Saturday in Dayton. Great job, Titans.

Attention FIFA lovers: The Office of Student Life is organizing a FIFA '17 tournament to be held during Lunch periods beginning September 28th. There will be a $5 entry fee and everyone is welcomed, but spots are limited. Pick up a registration form after 3rd period in the Office of Student Life, and contact Mr. Cabrera with any questions.

The SJJ cross country team came in 4th place overall at last Saturday's Mel Brodt Invitational, led by senior Adam Farthing who finished 16th individually. The Titans will compete again this Saturday at the Tiffin Carnival.

The SJJ golf team was victorious in yesterday's Catholic Cup at Stone Oak Country Club. Congratulations to SJJ junior Jack Spengler for earning the individual low man awards. Great job, Titan golfers.

Attention seniors: Application Boot Camp is tonight. Two sessions will be offered and you are required to come to one of them. Session 1 will run from 3:30-5:30pm, and session 2 from 6-8pm.    Bring a laptop or iPad, notebook paper and a writing utensil, and a positive attitude. Dress casually and meet in the SJJ Chapel just prior to whichever session you choose to attend.
