Honors and Advanced Placement (AP) Courses

In selecting your courses, please understand that colleges look carefully at what courses you have taken and how you have challenged yourself in comparison to what is offered at your high school.  Colleges will note that you took core courses beyond the mandated graduation requirements (for example, the fourth year of a science or social studies course or advanced world language courses).  Colleges will also note that you took honors or Advanced Placement (AP) courses.  In many cases the college admissions committee is more interested in the curriculum that a student takes than whether he got an "A" or "B" in the courses. St. John's Jesuit gives additional GPA weight or credit for Honors and AP courses.  Students are encouraged to select as much rigor in their course loads as they can reasonably handle and still maintain balance among academics, extracurricular activities, and their personal lives.

St. John's Jesuit offers the opportunity to take the Advanced Placement tests in a variety of classes. It is not necessary to be enrolled in an AP course to take an AP test. However, extra preparation will be necessary to adequately prepare. It is possible for students to earn college credit for performing well on the AP tests. In deciding whether or not to take the AP tests, students are advised to check closely with the policies and regulations of the universities they are considering.
